Spain’s Major Investment in Renewable Energy
Spain’s Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO) has announced the allocation of €612 million for 173 wind and hydropower repowering projects under the second Repotenciación Circular (Repoten 2) program. This initiative aims to modernize existing renewable energy facilities, enhancing generation capacity and integrating energy storage solutions.
Funding and Project Details
Funded through the European Union’s NextGenerationEU recovery plan, the program supports the upgrade of wind farms and hydropower plants with capacities of up to 50 MW. The final allocation more than doubles the program’s original budget, adding €320 million to meet the high demand for renewable energy projects.
- Wind Projects: €551.3 million
- Hydropower Upgrades: €60.7 million
Together, these projects are expected to mobilize approximately €3.75 billion in total investment.
Capacity Expansion and Energy Storage
The program includes:
- 81 wind repowering projects replacing older turbines with higher-capacity machines.
- 92 hydropower modernization projects.
These upgrades are projected to add about 2.433 GW of wind capacity and 1.091 GW of hydropower capacity. Notably, more than half of the selected projects will incorporate co-located energy storage, contributing over 2 GWh of additional storage capacity to Spain’s electricity system.
Environmental and Regional Impact
The funding for hydropower projects also includes enhancements to:
- Electromechanical equipment
- Plant automation
- Environmental measures such as fish passages and ecological flow systems
- Sediment management and habitat restoration
Galicia leads with the highest number of awarded projects at 40, followed by:
- Castilla y León: 32 projects
- Castilla-La Mancha: 19 projects
- Andalusia: 17 projects
- Aragon: 15 projects
All projects are required to be completed by June 30, 2030, with a potential extension to December 31, 2030.
