Zenobe has successfully acquired Bavaria-headquartered sdp energie, enhancing its position as the United Kingdom’s largest owner and operator of transmission-connected BESS assets. This acquisition provides Zenobe with greater access to the German energy storage market.
Details of the Acquisition
While the financial details of the deal remain undisclosed, this transaction combines a gigawatt-scale portfolio of operating and pipeline BESS projects. Zenobe currently operates or has under construction 3.3 GWh of BESS in the United Kingdom, while sdp energie has delivered approximately 700 MWh of BESS to ready-to-build status across 23 projects.
Impact on the German Energy Market
The acquisition aligns with Germany’s efforts to expand the role of grid-connected battery storage in providing electricity system stability services. In January 2026, Germany launched a new procurement mechanism for inertia, creating new revenue opportunities for transmission-connected BESS.

The company plans to leverage its experience in operating some of the most technologically advanced battery storage assets in one of Europe’s fastest-growing energy storage markets.

- Blackhillock BESS: The world’s first transmission-connected BESS project to provide full active and reactive power, commissioned in early 2025, with a capacity of 300 MW/600 MWh.
- Coalburn BESS: A 200 MW/800 MWh project in Scotland that reached financial close in June 2026, securing financing from leading international lenders.
Future Plans
Jonathan Wagner, co-founder of sdp energie, highlighted Zenobe’s expertise in project financing as a significant advantage of the deal. He stated, “Germany is poised to become one of Europe’s most important battery storage markets.” The collaboration aims to shape this market by combining sdp energie’s development platform with Zenobe’s global expertise.
James Basden, co-founder and director at Zenobe, indicated that the company intends to acquire more transmission-scale projects and collaborate with leading offtaker providers. Zenobe is also actively recruiting personnel in Germany.
